About Us

The Irish Physical Activity Alliance (IPAA) is a group of stakeholders, including fitness and health professionals, politicians, and business associations. We will be advocating collectively to have physical activity fully incorporated into our national health strategy by introducing policies that incentivize and support people to become more physically active.

A nation getting sicker

Physical inactivity is identified as one of the top five risk factors for sickness and disease, with one in six deaths in Ireland linked to physical inactivity. By 2030, it is projected that 80% of our population will be either overweight or obese.

The cost of physical inactivity to the exchequer is estimated at €1.5 billion annually.

Currently, we are losing the battle for the health of our nation. However, there is a better way. We must shift our perspective on healthcare from being a cost to an investment. Transitioning from the traditional disease-focused intervention to a fully incorporated preventive healthcare model.

Physical activity is one of our best weapons we have in the battle with sickness and disease. The evidence is irrefutable –its time to fully include physical activity in our health strategy.

“If we could package the wonders of physical activity into a pill it would be the most subscribed super-pill in the world” Prof Niall Moyna

If we can increase physical activity by just 20mins a day, we can achieve a 30% reduction in all-cause mortality.

One of the biggest existential challenges society faces

By 2050, for the first time in history, there will be more people on the planet over 65 than under 65. We are facing a tsunami of ill-health and increased medical support requirements if we do not increase the physical activity of our nation now..

Its time to deploy the Irish Fitness Industry

Existing government policies focus on using sports to promote physical activity, but they overlook the fact that participation in sports during adulthood is minimal. Adults greatly prefer gym-based fitness activities. Over 600,000 Irish adults participate in personal gym-based exercise, which is more than the combined number of individuals participating in running, football, and rugby.

It is time to capitalize on this preference.

Deploying the Irish Fitness Industry - Immediate impact

  • Already nationwide, over 800 locations, in all communities.

  • Trained experts in situ.

  • 16% of the population participate; if we can increase this to 20%, we will achieve a social tipping point.

  • Fastest-growing demographic: +55 years.

  • The only viable option to increase muscle mass, especially important for women pre-, post-, and during menopause.

  • Unique communication platforms to drive behaviour change.
